Uh, I can't remember exactly what I was thinking about at the time, but it's mostlly just things he says, like "this is what I get for subcontracting" and "you were in my kingdom but you didn't look me up?" Maybe I'm overreaching to make my theory work.  |
It's just a modern way of putting it. Like, Genie and others calling Aladdin "Al" although that nickname is more likely to be used in modern day America. Or like "Okay" which is probably the most common word in all the series but also rather modern.
It's not a true anachronism like Jago and Genie pull them off. |

| What's the policy on posting in old threads here? Just asking to avoid any trouble, as there are some topics I'd like to add my five cents to, and I kinda didn't want to start any new topics on stuff that's probably already been discussed countless times. |

Jafar didn't really get into it until after his second wish, and after that he turns Abu into a wind-up toy monkey, mimes playing golf, and probably other things I'm forgetting. And of course in RoJ he parodies the movie Psycho.

Yes, I've noticed that pple around Iago and Genie often tend to take their anachronisms in stride.
@Syera:  Criminey, I nearly had a heart attack when I saw that thing. *L* It'd be pretty unsettling to see something like that floating around Mozenrath as they're evilly cackling over some scheme. Yeah, I suppose you're right about Mozie being pretty original when it comes to animal sidekicks.
I freely admit that wolves and foxes are heniously overused (it irks me as well), but since we don't see either species in Aladdin, I figured it'd be alright. Maybe a fennec or an Arabian wolf to fit in better with the show's theme (as opposed to the much more common red foxes and gray wolves). |

You have to give Mozenrath props for being original, unlike 1,347,895,837 kids out there who are only interested in "cool" animals like wolves and foxes and big kitties and sharp-taloned burdy-wurdies and overgrown wingaling lizards.

This might seem stereotypical, but for some reason, I see Mozenrath with either a fox or wolf sidekick/familiar myself. That might be a funny story; Xerxes loosing his job to a better sidekick and trying to get it back.
Someone bought up Thundra earlier; I've heard her called a phoenix someplace before, so I've started thinking of her as one too. Perhaps one based on a quetzel.

As for the name... Shakespeare didn't make that name up, it's older than him. Just googled it right now and it says it's the Spanish and Welsh version of the names Jacob or James, so you could just say that Iago's real name is the Arabic version of that (Yakub), just like Jasmine would really be Yasmin, Aladdin would really be Ala' al din, etc.

I hear that Saleen was based off an old design for Ursula, so it wouldn't surprise me to hear that Xerxes was based on Flotsam and Jetsam...
I'd guess with Xerxes' personality they were going for something like an Igor kind of character, but as for why he's a flying eel I can't really guess; I want to know what they were smoking when they came up with that.
I remember reading an interview with Tad Stones where he talked about working on the Atlantis series, and how his bosses had said they had to add an animal sidekick, so they put in... I think it was some kind of lizard? Anyway, maybe it was that kind of situation. |

Thanks for the link Calluna. Oh right, Iago's name did not originate with Shakespeare. It is quite an appropriate name though.
randomly about Xerxes: doesn't he remind you of the eels from the Little Mermaid? Well, he's dumber and not as creepy. But he's got the whole ugly, googly eye thing down pretty well.
